Workshop: Voguing - Arms Control and playful Shapes

Voguing is an art form within Ballroom, a queer Afro-diasporic subculture founded in the 1970s primarily by Black and Latina trans women in Harlem, New York. Arms Control is a key element of New Way, featuring intricate, rapid, and controlled arm movements that create striking shapes and illusions to the music. It requires precision, flexibility, and coordination, often incorporating tutting, contortion, and optical effects that make the arms appear to dislocate or weave seamlessly through space. In this workshop, we will explore some basics, find fun ways to expand our movement vocabulary, and freestyle with it! :) Open to all levels

Voguing ist eine Kunstform innerhalb der Ballroom-Szene, einer queeren afrodiasporischen Subkultur, die in den 1970er Jahren hauptsächlich von Schwarzen und Latina trans Frauen in Harlem, New York, gegründet wurde. Arms Control ist ein zentrales Element des New Way und zeichnet sich durch präzise, schnelle und kontrollierte Armbewegungen zur Musik aus, die eindrucksvolle Formen und Illusionen erzeugen. Es erfordert Präzision, Flexibilität und Koordination und beinhaltet oft Tutting, Contortion und optische Effekte, die die Arme scheinbar ausrenken oder nahtlos durch den Raum weben lassen. In diesem Workshop werden wir die Grundlagen erforschen, spielerische Wege finden, unser Bewegungsrepertoire zu erweitern, und damit freestylen! 😊 Open to all levels

Aaron Josi Sternbauer (they/them) is a transdisciplinary artist working with movement, vocal performance, and visual arts through a sensual, community-focused approach. Their work, rooted in care, queerness, and the sensorial world, aims to foster connection and relation. Also known as Harmony Dive in the ballroom scene, they are recognized for their Arms Control and New Way, as a child of Karin Cheng, the founder of the Kiki House of Dive.
